As a mum of two under two, a reliable baby monitor that caters to a little tribe is an absolute essential. After trying a cheaper monitor with our first and quickly realising it wasn’t up to the job, we knew we needed something better the second time around. We’ve been using the VTech baby monitor with two cameras for over a year now. Below, I share my honest review so you can see if two is really better than one.

Design
The VTech baby monitor with dual cameras includes a wireless 5-inch LCD screen and two pan-and-tilt cameras. The screen has a sleek, rectangular design with a large display. It is slimline with the bottom part bulking out slightly so that it can stand upright. We like the minimalist design but found it occasionally tips over if not placed carefully, so we recommend placing the screen on a flat, stable surface. The adjustable signal arm can be raised and lowered, though we haven’t needed to adjust it during use and haven't experienced any signal issues. VTech baby monitor cameras feature a spherical design that looks stylish in any modern nursery. Both the monitor and the camera come in white, with no alternative colours currently available.
Picture and Sound
The picture quality on the VTech camera baby monitor is clear and sharp, so it's easy to keep an eye on your baby day and night. The colour display shows a surprisingly high level of detail, with the camera automatically switching to infrared night vision as the sun sets, producing a clear black-and-white image. We found it really easy to see our baby’s movements, and if we looked closely enough, we could even observe them breathing on the LCD screen. The display shows which camera is currently active, whether night vision is activated, the room temperature, and the battery life. The room temperature icon is particularly useful as it helps us to decide how to dress the bab properly for bed each night without the need for additional products (such as the Tommee Tippee GroEgg).
We were also quite impressed with the sound quality. The audio comes through clearly, with no distortion, and even the most subtle noises are easily picked up. The volume can be adjusted to your preference, and you get an immediate alert via a beeping sound when loud noises are detected. While we think this feature is useful, particularly for heavy sleepers, it can feel a little intrusive at times, especially since this noise could disturb your little one’s sleep if they are close to the parent unit. Unfortunately, the alert can’t be turned off, which is slightly inconvenient.
Setting up the VTech dual baby monitor
The VTech baby monitor is very easy to set up and use straight out of the box. You just need to plug in both cameras, and the monitor is ready to use immediately. You can then choose to view camera 1, 2 or both simultaneously. When using the dual-view function, you can see both views very clearly, with only a slight amount of the image cut off to accommodate both. However, we found that switching between cameras one at a time is a little tedious, as you need to scroll through the menu each time. It would be much more convenient if the parent unit had dedicated “1” and “2” buttons, allowing you to move between cameras with a single click rather than navigating the menu.
The cameras can be mounted on the wall or used freestanding, depending on your setup. We chose to leave ours freestanding, as we plan to rearrange the rooms slightly once the babies are a bit older. We did find it a bit of a challenge figuring out where to place the cameras this way, but this is more of an issue with the room than with the cameras themselves. We also really like the ability to pan and tilt the camera. Our 18-month old moves around a lot in her sleep, so being able to follow her around in her cot with the camera is handy. I think this would also be useful when transitioning to a toddler bed as you can keep track of your little tot if they decide to go on a midnight wander. The VTech baby monitor additional camera could also be useful for those with just one child. You could set the cameras up in different areas of the room for a range of viewpoints, or even set up the additional camera in the living room or play area for when you need to nip out for that emergency whizz.
Ease of use
The monitor also has a talkback function. We haven’t used this much (other than to call up to my partner, “Remember the socks!”) as our little girl finds it a bit frightening when she hears a voice through the camera. But we imagine that for other children, it could be a reassuring way to let you know you are nearby. This is also a non-WiFi VTech baby monitor, which is a plus for those with safeguarding concerns. Many parents online have reported hearing scary voices through the monitor when it's connected to the net, so this signal-only device prevents anyone but you from accessing the monitor. It’s also just handy when your WiFi goes on the blink or when you need to use it without an internet connection. For example, when we stayed with grandparents over the holidays who still live in the Stone Age and aren’t connected to WiFi, we were pleased that we could use our VTech baby monitor as usual.
Durability
We’ve had our VTech monitor for well over a year, and it still works perfectly and has proven to be surprisingly robust! Both the parent unit and cameras have been dropped multiple times and have continued to work without any real issues. This is mainly because we precariously balance the camera on our headboard and forget about it as soon as we sit down to go to bed. But despite this less-than-gentle treatment, the VTech dual baby monitor has held up extremely well. However, we have noticed that the battery drains daily and doesn’t reflect the advertised 17-31 hours, which is slightly disappointing. The VTech baby monitor charger setup is very easy, so this isn’t a dealbreaker.
Is the VTech Baby Monitor worth the money?
The monitor is very fairly priced for what you get. You’re essentially paying for two cameras and a parent unit for the price of one. Both are well-made, reliable and built to last for years of daily use. When we had our firstborn, we initially bought a cheap Amazon monitor but quickly realised this was a mistake. The VTech baby monitor charger setup is much easier to navigate; the screen was tiny, and the sound quality was mediocre at best. When we found out we were expecting our second, we upgraded to the VTech baby monitor and haven’t looked back.
For items used every day and that concern your baby's safety, I do think it’s worth spending a little extra for something dependable. You’ll have more peace of mind knowing you can see and hear your baby clearly, and having a reliable, easy-to-use product makes a huge difference in day-to-day tasks. So, despite the slightly higher price compared to cheaper alternatives, we’d highly recommend this gadget as the best VTech baby monitor money can buy.
